Thiel tops Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 59-47 verdict to visiting Thiel Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City committed a season-low nine turnovers but could not overcome 18-for-53 (34 percent) shooting from the field.

Thiel jumped out to an 8-0 lead but Grove City eventually rallied for forge a 22-22 tie by halftime. Freshman guard Charlie Thomas (Warren, Pa./Warren) drilled a pair of three-pointers while juniors Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Sam Barnhill (Mansfield, Ohio/Ontario) also drained threes during a 14-4 run.

Matson hit two free throws early in the second half to give the Wolverines their first lead of the game.

However, Thiel surged ahead with a 13-0 run later in the half as Grove City went scoreless for nearly five minutes.

Matson led Grove City with 13 points and Thomas added 10. Matson and junior Cody Fleeger (Butler, Pa./Butler) both had six rebounds. Fleeger also had three assists.

Blair Rozenblad led Thiel (9-4, 5-0 PAC) with 17 points. Aundra Jones posted an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double and Ladell Trotty also recorded 11 points. Thiel shot 40 percent (19 of 48) from the field and owned a 43-30 edge on the glass. Thiel had 10 turnovers.

Grove City will visit Geneva Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
