Bethany nips Grove City
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Wednesday night with a 67-63 setback against Bethany (5-0, 1-0 PAC) in the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City took a 57-54 lead with 3:48 left when freshman guard Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) buried a three-pointer. However, Bethany outscored Grove City 13-6 over the final three minutes of the game.
Bethany surged ahead in the second half with a 20-2 run that erased Grove City's 36-24 lead. Grove City answered with a 10-0 run of its own as senior center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) and freshman guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) ignited the run with layups.
Freshman guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and Durbin followed with consecutive three-pointers, giving the Wolverines a 48-44 lead with 10 minutes left.
Grove City led by as many as eight, 53-45, in the second half before Bethany rallied.
Marmelstein led all scorers with a career-high 24 points, including four three-pointers. Schwartz added 10 points while Verderber posted eight points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) distributed six assists.
Nick Wilcox led Bethany with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Brady Pacific added 15 points. Bethany shot 56 percent (14 of 25) from the floor in the second half, including a 7-for-15 effort on three-pointers in that period. For the game, Bethany shot 39 percent (23 of 59) while Grove City converted 26 of 57 (46 percent) of its field goal attempts.
Bethany outrebounded Grove City 42-33. Thirteen of Grove City's 16 turnovers came in the second half. Grove City led 33-24 at halftime.
Grove City will visit conference foe Thomas More Saturday at 3 p.m.
