Hot Hiram tops Grove City

HIRAM, Ohio -- Host Hiram made 10 of 14 three-point goals in the first half Wednesday night on its way to a 92-64 victory over Grove City in non-conference men's basketball action at Price Gymnasium.

Hiram hit four three-pointers in the first 3:37, helping the Terriers jump out to a 14-4 lead. Grove City pulled to within 17-15 on a layup by freshman guard Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) at the 12:23 mark.

However, Hiram broke open the game with a 17-4 run. The lead eventually grew to 58-31 in the first half and Hiram held a 58-35 halftime lead.

Freshman guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) led the Wolverines (4-5) with 16 points and freshman guard Rob Zewe (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) added a career-high 15 points.

Grove City shot 43 percent (25 of 58) from the field. Hiram converted 34 of 69 (49 percent) of its shots for the game, including a 15 of 32 (47 percent) outing on three-pointers. Hiram shot 20 for 30 (67 percent) overall from the floor in the first half.

Aaron Stefanov led Hiram (4-3) with 17 points while Tom Herchek (16), Jamaal Watkins (15) and Alan Sheppard (10) also scored in double figures.

Hiram outrebounded Grove City 42-29. Freshman Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) led Grove City with five rebounds. Senior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) recorded four assists.

Grove City returns to action December 29 when the Wolverines face Muskingum at 6 p.m. in the semifinals of the McDonald's of Bluffton Tournament.
