Bethany tops Grove City

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 78-57 decision to homestanding Bethany Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Hummel Field House.

Bethany (16-2, 8-1 PAC) led 39-29 at halftime but Grove City quickly cut the lead in half as freshman guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) fired in five straight points over the first 90 seconds of the second half.

Bethany answered with a 24-5 run over the next nine minutes, however, and led 63-39 with nine minutes left. Grove City shot just 9 for 31 (29 percent) from the floor in the second half. For the game, the Wolverines went 19 for 58 (33 percent). Bethany shot 46 percent (26 of 57) from the field.

Freshman guard Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) led Grove City with 14 points while Schwartz and senior center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) each had 10 points.

James Barton led Bethany with 20 points while Nick Wilcox added 15 points and eight boards. Bethany outrebounded Grove City 40-33.

Freshman guard Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and senior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) each had five rebounds for Grove City. Matson also had four assists.

Grove City (7-10, 3-6 PAC) hosts Thomas More Wednesday night in conference action at 8 p.m.
