Thomas More holds off Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 73-65 verdict to visiting Thomas More Wednesday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference action in the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City trailed by 16, 67-51, with five minutes remaining in the second half but the Wolverines charged back into the game with a 12-2 run. Senior center Kris Verderber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) ignited the run with a jumper and freshman guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) followed with a three-pointer.

Senior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) slashed the lead to 69-59 with a three-point play. On Grove City's next possession, a Matson layup pulled the Wolverines to within eight with three minutes left. Verderber hit another jumper with 1:24 left, cutting Thomas More's lead to 69-63.

However, Saint center Colt Stafford hit a short jumper, stopping the run and helping preserve the win.

Matson led Grove City with 19 points and nine rebounds while Verderber finished with 15 points. Grove City shot 26 of 65 (40 percent) for the game while Thomas More went 28 of 59 (48 percent) from the floor, including a 9-for-21 performance on three-point attempts.

Phil Feinberg led Thomas More (12-7, 7-3 PAC) with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Ryan Hamm added 12 points on 4-of-4 three-point shooting. Grove City outrebounded Thomas More 39-36. Thomas More led 34-23 at halftime after closing the first half on a 12-4 run.

Grove City (7-11, 3-7) will host Saint Vincent Saturday at 3 p.m. in conference play.
