4th straight for Grove City
GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College men’s basketball team continued its
second-half surge Wednesday night by rolling to an 82-64 victory over visiting
Waynesburg in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action on Senior Night at the
Grove City College Arena.
It is Grove City’s fourth consecutive win overall and raises the Wolverines’
overall record to 11-12.
Senior guard Brett Matson (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) fired in 24 points on
8-of-11 shooting and also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for Grove City
(7-8 PAC).
Freshman guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano,
Calif./St. Margaret’s) added 14 points.
Grove City trailed 16-12 seven minutes into the game but
charged back with a 12-2 run. Junior forward Nate Rambacher (Newmanstown,
Pa./Eastern Lebanon) ignited the spurt with a three-point play and freshman
guard Christian Durbin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) put Grove City ahead
19-18 with a layup.
Freshman forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery
Rock) drained a three-pointer midway through the second half to extend Grove
City’s lead to 24-18.
Matson and Durbin hit consecutive three-pointers late in the first half to give
Grove City a 39-29 lead. Durbin’s driving layup with two seconds left gave the
Wolverines a 41-29 halftime lead.
The Wolverines extended the lead to as many as 24 in the second half.
Grove City shot 52 percent (30 of 58) from the field for the game, including an
11-for-22 effort on three-point goals. Seven different Wolverines had at least
one three-pointer.
Grove City also owned a 37-35 edge in rebounds. Matson added
three steals and three assists to his 11 rebounds. Senior center Kris Verderber
(Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) distributed five assists.
Kurt Bonnet led Waynesburg (4-20, 1-14 PAC) with 17 points. Waynesburg shot 40
percent (23 of 58) from the field. Waynesburg had just nine turnovers. Grove
City turned over the ball 10 times.
Grove City recognized seniors Matson, Verderber, forward Cody
Fleeger (Butler, Pa./Butler) and Mike Grist (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) prior to
Wednesday game.
Grove City concludes the regular season Saturday at Thiel at 3 p.m.
