Wells edges Grove City 78-75

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 78-75 decision to Wells College (N.Y.) Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Penn State Behrend Tip-Off Tournament at the Junker Centre.

Grove City had a chance to tie the game on the final possession of the game but three-point attempts by sophomore guards Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) and Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) both missed.

Grove City (0-2) led 57-47 with 13:37 left and led throughout much of the second half. Wells (1-1) led Grove City scoreless for over five minutes down the stretch, however, and led 76-72 with one minute left. Sophomore guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) hit a free throw and bucketed a layup that cut the lead to one.

Wells' E.J. Taylor sank a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left, pushing the lead to 78-75.

Schwartz led Grove City with 19 points. He also had a team-high eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Marmelstein added 16 points while Patterson pumped in 10 points. Sophomore guard Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) tallied nine points and five assists.

Grove City shot 46 percent (30 for 65) from the field, including a 9-for-18 effort on three-point goals. Defensively, Grove City forced 24 turnovers.

Wells did shoot 48 percent (28 of 58) from the field and also owned a 42-27 edge in rebounds. Taylor led Wells with 18 points and J.J. Walton had 17 points.

Grove City will visit Kenyon Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in non-conference action in Gambier, Ohio.
