Grove City earns first league win

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team improved to 1-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night by pulling out a 55-49 conference win over host Waynesburg at Rudy Marisa Field House.

The Wolverines fell behind 24-11 in the first half but closed the first half with a 13-2 spurt over the final six minutes of the period. Sophomore guards Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) highlighted that run with three-point baskets.

Schwartz's steal and subsequent layup with 12 minutes left in the second half gave Grove City its first lead of the game, 34-32. Grove City pushed the lead to 41-35 but Waynesburg forged a 43-all tie with 4:14 left. However, a jumper from senior forward Nate Rambacher (Newmanstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon) with 3:30 remaining put Grove City ahead for good.

Schwartz led Grove City with 19 points and Durbin pumped in 10. Rambacher added nine and sophomore guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) recorded eight points.

Grove City shot 37 percent (15 of 41) from the field while holding Waynesburg to a 19-for-59 (32 percent) effort. Waynesburg shot just 28 percent (9 for 32) in the second half. Grove City held Waynesburg to a 1-for-18 performance on three-point attempts.

Waynesburg outrebounded the Wolverines 41-36. Schwartz and freshman center Erik Carlstrom (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) both had seven rebounds.

Jason Propst led Waynesburg (2-5, 0-3 PAC) with 15 points.

Grove City hosts conference foe Saint Vincent Saturday at 3 p.m.
