Oberlin edges Grove City, 57-55

OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 57-55 verdict at Oberlin Wednesday night in non-conference action at Phillips Gymnasium.

Grove City trailed by 11 on two different occasions in the second half but pulled to within 56-55 with two minutes left on a three-point goal by sophomore forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock). However, Grove City could reclaim the lead on either of its next two possessions.

Oberlin's Emmanuel Lewis pushed the lead to 57-55 with two seconds left by splitting a pair of free throws. A desperation three-point attempt by sophomore guard Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) missed as time expired.

Oberlin led 25-20 at halftime and opened the second half with an 8-2 run. The Wolverines quickly cut the lead to 38-37 with 11 minutes left as sophomore guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) scored eight straight points.

Oberlin stretched its advantage back to 11, 51-40, with seven minutes remaining but a three-point play from freshman center Mark Pilarski (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) and a three-point goal from sophomore guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) ignited another comeback.

Marmelstein led Grove City with 21 points and seven rebounds. Schwartz added eight points. Grove City shot 21 of 59 (36 percent) from the floor in the game. The Wolverines had just seven turnovers.

Geoff Simpson led Oberlin (4-6) with a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double. Andrew Fox added 13 points and 10 boards. The Yeomen shot 20 of 47 (43 percent) from the field and also held a 41-31 rebound edge. Grove City did force 19 Oberlin turnovers.

The teams had not met since the 1985-86 season.

Grove City returns to action December 28 at the York (Pa.) Tournament, where the Wolverines will face York at 6 p.m. in the semifinals.
