Grove City charges past Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team improved to 2-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a come-from-behind 77-68 road win over Geneva at Metheny Field House.

Grove City trailed 30-27 at halftime but opened the second half on a 22-5 run. Sophomore guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret) tied the game at 32 with a three-point play and sophomore forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) put Grove City ahead for good on its next possession by drilling a three-pointer.

Sophomore forward Ford Reinalda (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) boosted the lead to 45-35 with a three-pointer and a three-point play on Grove City's next possession. Reinalda hit two free throws with 13 minutes left to close the run.

The Wolverines took their largest lead of the game, 67-51, with seven minutes left when senior center Steve Battaglia (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) converted a three-point play.

Grove City shot 15 of 26 (58 percent) from the field in the second half. For the game, the Wolverines went 27 of 56 (48 percent).

Marmelstein led Grove City with 19 points while Reinalda finished with 13. Freshman center Mark Pilarski (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) added 10 points. Battaglia, Giesler and sophomore guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) all had nine each.

Schwartz grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Marmelstein had eight boards, helping the Wolverines amass a 38-31 edge on the glass. Marmelstein had four assists.

Keynon Jackson led Geneva (1-12, 1-5) with 17 points. Geneva shot 26 of 58 (45 percent) from the field. Geneva had 12 turnovers and Grove City turned over the ball 11 times.

Winners of three out of the last four, Grove City (4-8 overall) hosts conference foe Washington & Jefferson Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
