Wolverines drop league battle
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 63-50 decision to visiting Washington & Jefferson Wednesday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
W&J led 30-17 late in the first half and extended the lead to 35-21 by halftime. Grove City slashed the lead to 40-35 with 13:37 remaining in the second half on a three-pointer from sophomore forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock).
The Wolverines trailed 48-41 with eight minutes to go but then went over five minutes without a field goal. During that span, W&J outscored Grove City 11-1.
Sophomore guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's), this week's conference Player of the Week, led Grove City with a game-high 20 points. Giesler added 11. Grove City shot 32 percent (17 of 54) from the field for the game.
Nate Bellhy led W&J (6-9, 4-2) with 14 points. Doug Johnson and Zach Bellhy both had 13 points. The Presidents shot 21 of 54 (39 percent) for the game. Grove City held W&J to an 8-for-26 (31 percent) shooting effort in the second half.
W&J outrebounded Grove City 44-32. Sophomore guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) grabbed seven rebounds for Grove City. Grove City had 16 turnovers and W&J had 20 turnovers.
The Wolverines (4-9, 2-4) host Thiel Saturday at 3 p.m. in conference play.
