Grove City falls at home
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team opened the second half of the Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Saturday afternoon with a 73-64 setback against visiting Thomas More (15-3, 8-1) at the Grove City College Arena.
Sophomore guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) led Grove City (6-11, 3-6) with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting while sophomore forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) added nine points. Sophomore guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) pumped in eight points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Thomas More led 36-29 at halftime but Grove City quickly trimmed the lead as Giesler hit a three-pointer and Schwartz drilled a jumper. However, Thomas More countered with an 11-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 47-34.
The Wolverines charged back with an 8-2 spurt behind three-pointers from Schwartz and junior guard Evan Schell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oliver). Another Schwartz three-pointer with 5:37 left slashed Thomas More's lead to 61-56. Grove City could get no closer, though.
For the game, Grove City shot 51 percent (24 of 47) from the field, including a 9-for-19 (47 percent) effort on three-pointers. Thomas More did coerce 17 Grove City turnovers.
D'Carlo Hayes led Thomas More with 17 points. Brandon Housley recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Thomas More outrebounded Grove City 34-27.
Schwartz added five assists while Marmelstein and sophomore guard Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) each had three assists.
Grove City will host Waynesburg Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in conference action.
