Thiel tops Grove City in tournament

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 57-44 decision at No. 3 seed Thiel Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia.

Grove City, the sixth seed, jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Five different Wolverines scored during that game-opening run.

Thiel countered with an 18-4 run over the final 10 minutes of the period and took a 24-20 lead at halftime. Thiel then outscored Grove City 16-7 over the first nine minutes of the second half to take a double-digit lead.

Grove City (10-16) pulled to within 48-39 with six minutes left on a layup from sophomore guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) but could get no closer.

Marmelstein and sophomore guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) led Grove City with 10 points each. Grove City shot 43 percent (16 of 37) for the game but turned over the ball 23 times.

A.J. Forbes and Kamran McCaskill each paced Thiel (14-9) with 12 points. Thiel went 21 of 50 (42 percent) from the field.

Grove City owned a 32-24 edge in rebounds as freshman guard Isaiah Reeves (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) led the way with six boards.

Grove City will graduate senior forwards Steve Battaglia (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) and Nate Rambacher (Newmanstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon).
