Grove City edged by Valley Forge in season opener
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a tightly-contested game to Valley Forge Christian, falling to the Patriots 75-72 in the season-opener for both teams at the Geneva College Coaches vs. Cancer Tipoff Tournament on Saturday evening.
Junior Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) led all scorers with 16 points while fellow juniors Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
In a game that was tied 36-36 at halftime and close throughout, free throws became the key, as Valley Forge (1-0) made 13 of 18 attempts (72.2 percent) in the second half compared to just 5 of 13 (38.5 percent) for the Wolverines.
Grove City (0-1) shot 47 percent from the floor but allowed the Patriots to shoot 50 percent overall and 44 percent from three-point range.
Patterson and junior Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) each had a game-high seven rebounds.
The Wolverines face Houghton tomorrow at 1:00 in the second day of the Geneva tournament.
