Grove City falls to Oberlin

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped to 4-3 overall Wednesday night with a 63-50 setback against visiting Oberlin (3-7) in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City shot just 27 percent (17 of 62) from the field for the game. The Wolverines also went 8 for 34 (24 percent) from behind the three-point line.

Oberlin jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game but Grove City eventually closed the lead to two points later in the half. Oberlin led 28-22 at halftime. Grove City cut the lead to two again, 29-27, two minutes into the second half when junior guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) recorded a three-point play.

However, Oberlin took command of the game with a 14-0 run over the next five minutes.

Junior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) paced Grove City with 15 points and Schwartz added nine. Marmelstein and junior forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) each had five rebounds. Marmelstein also had four assists while junior guard Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) recorded four steals.

Grove City forced 18 turnovers while committing a season-low seven miscues.

Geoff Simpson led Oberlin with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Emmanuel Lewis added 15 points. Oberlin shot 19 for 49 (39 percent) for the game. The Yeomen outrebounded Grove City 49-30.

Grove City returns to action December 27 at Wittenberg University in the semifinals of the Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic in Springfield, Ohio.
