Wittenberg tops Grove City

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 79-40 decision at Wittenberg Friday night in the semifinals of Wittenberg's Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic at Pam Evans Smith Arena.

Grove City (4-4) will now face Marian (Ind.) in Saturday's consolation game at 2:15 p.m. Marian fell to Kean in Friday's other semifinal, 50-48.

Wittenberg (9-1) limited Grove City to a 14-for-56 (25 percent) shooting performance from the field. Conversely, Wittenberg went 28 for 58 (48 percent) from the field.

Sophomore guard Joe Vermilya (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) led Grove City with 10 points. Freshman guard Mitch Newburg (Farmington, Minn./St. Thomas) added six points.

Cody Phillippi led Wittenberg with 12 points while Scott Masin had 11 points and 14 rebounds. Wittenberg owned a 45-30 edge in rebounds. Grove City had 13 turnovers while Wittenberg had 14.

Friday's game marked Grove City's first since December 11.
