Grove City rallies past Waynesburg, 70-68
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team improved to 2-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Friday afternoon by pulling out a 70-68 win over visiting Waynesburg (5-7, 0-3 PAC) in the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City trailed 61-57 with under three minutes left but surged ahead on consecutive three-pointers from junior forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) and junior guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler). Waynesburg tied the game when E.J. Coleman hit two free throws but Giesler put Grove City ahead to stay with another three-pointer with 1:12 left.
In the final 16 seconds, junior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) converted four straight free throws to help seal the victory.
Schwartz fired in a game-high 19 points while Giesler pumped in 18 points. Marmelstein added 16 points and a team-leading seven rebounds.
Grove City led 40-38 at halftime and pushed the lead to eight, 53-45, when junior guard Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) hit a three-pointer midway through the second half. However, Waynesburg held the Wolverines to just one field goal over the next seven minutes during a 16-4 run.
Schwartz also grabbed six rebounds and tallied five steals while Giesler had five boards and four assists. Patterson finished with nine points.
Grove City held Waynesburg to an 8-for-26 (31 percent) shooting performance from the field in the second half. For the game, Waynesburg went 20 for 53 (38 percent) while Grove City shot 39 percent (24 of 62).
Coleman led Waynesburg with 16 points. Waynesburg owned a 43-34 edge in rebounds. Grove City had just nine turnovers while forcing 15 Waynesburg turnovers.
Grove City (5-5) will visit Saint Vincent Saturday at 3 p.m. in conference action.
