Waynesburg edges Grove City, 63-60
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team fell to 5-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night by dropping a 63-60 decision at Waynesburg (9-10, 4-6 PAC) in conference action at Rudy Marisa Field House.
Sophomore guard Stephen Tam (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham) fired in a game- and career-high 20 points to pace Grove City while junior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) added 15 points.
Grove City led 32-24 late in the first half but Waynesburg scored the final 10 points of the period and led 34-32 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 43-35 in the second half but Grove City eventually pulled into a 50-50 tie with five minutes left on a Marmelstein basket.
The Wolverines could not reclaim the lead, however.
Grove City went 24 for 57 (42 percent) from the floor and limited Waynesburg to an 18-for-46 (39 percent) effort on field goals. The Wolverines held Waynesburg to an 8-for-24 shooting effort in the second half. Grove City also forced 20 Waynesburg turnovers. The Wolverines had 16 turnovers. Waynesburg hit 18 of 25 foul shots while Grove City converted 5 of 7.
B.J. Durham led Waynesburg with 17 points, including five three-point goals.
Junior guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) paced Grove City with five rebounds. He also had four assists and four steals. Marmelstein and junior guard Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) both had three assists. Waynesburg outrebounded Grove City, 36-31.
Grove City will host conference foe Bethany Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Grove City College Arena.
