Grove City whips Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team produced its top defensive effort of the 2013-14 season Saturday night by limiting host Geneva to just 39 points in a 56-39 Wolverine victory at Metheny Field House in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

Grove City held Geneva to just 10 field goals for the game. The Wolverines limited Geneva to a 10-for-42 (24 percent) effort from the field. Grove City also forced 15 turnovers.

Geneva jumped out to a 7-0 lead two minutes into the game but Grove City outscored the Tornadoes 39-15 over the rest of the half. The Wolverines led by as many as 21 points in the second half.

Junior guards Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) and Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) each paced Grove City (9-13, 6-8 PAC) with 10 points. Junior forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) and sophomore guard Isaiah Reeves (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) both added eight points.

Grove City shot 15 for 45 (33 percent) for the game. The Wolverines drilled 20 of 27 (74 percent) foul shots.

Junior guard Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) pulled in a team-leading six rebounds. Geneva held a 37-36 edge on the glass. Jordan Harbison led Geneva (4-19, 0-14) with 14 points.

The 39 points are the fewest allowed by Grove City since a 46-39 win at Waynesburg January 29, 2011. The 10 field goals are against are the lowest since Grove City held D'Youville to nine baskets in a 73-28 Grove City win February 17, 1999.

Grove City will visit conference rival Westminster Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
