Cold shooting dooms Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team closed its 2013-14 regular season Saturday afternoon with a 59-45 setback against visiting Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (10-14, 7-9 PAC) will be the No. 7 seed in next week's conference tournament. Thiel (10-12, 7-9 PAC) will be the sixth seed.

Grove City shot just 16 for 59 (27 percent) from the field for the game, including a 5-for-26 (19 percent) effort on three-pointers. The Wolverines also turned over the ball 25 times. Thiel jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game and never trailed. The Tomcats led 26-15 at halftime.

Junior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) led Grove City with 13 points while junior guard Josh Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) added 11. Junior guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) led Grove City with five rebounds, helping Grove City earn a 39-32 edge in rebounds. Twenty-two of Grove City's rebounds came at the offensive end.

Schwartz also had four assists and four steals. Marmelstein had three assists.

Charlie Thomas led Thiel with 14 points. Thiel shot 21 of 41 (51 percent) for the game. The Tomcats had 21 turnovers.

Grove City honored senior guard Evan Schell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oliver) prior to the game as part of Senior Day festivities.

Grove City will visit No. 2 seed Thomas More Tuesday night in the conference tournament quarterfinals.
