Wolverines roll past Franciscan in finale

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's basketball team opened the game on a 24-4 run and had four players reach double figures as the Wolverines rolled to an 81-60 win over Franciscan to close the 2013-14 season on Friday evening at Kuzma Court.

Junior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) led the Wolverines with 15 points and four assists while junior forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) added 14 points. Senior guard Evan Schell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oliver) scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds in his final collegiate game while sophomore guard Stephen Tam (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham) also added 10 points.

Six three-pointers, including two each from Schell and Tam, keyed the Wolverines' opening 24-4 run which spanned the first 10:32 of the first half.

Franciscan (6-18) would cut the deficit to 11 on two occasions, but a Christian Durbin (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) three-point play sparked an 8-0 run that saw the lead grow back to 19 before a pair of Baron layups made it a 43-28 score at halftime.

Tam and Marmelstein each had 10 first-half points to lead Grove City, who shot 57 percent (17-30) from the floor in the period.

Sophomore Isaiah Reeves (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) would score the first five points after halftime to extend the Grove City lead back to 20 points and the Wolverines would lead by as much as 26 points in the second half before Franciscan closed the deficit to its final margin.

Moses Sullivan led Franciscan with 18 points and seven rebounds while Daniel Kleinschnitz and Christian Duke each added nine.

With the last of his four three-pointers on the evening, Giesler set a new Grove City single-season record for three-pointers made with 76, eclipsing Shawn Carr's mark of 75 set during the 2007-08 season. The 2013-14 Wolverines also set a single-season record as a team with 240 three-pointers made.

Grove City finishes the 2013-14 season at 11-15 overall.
