Wolverines hold off UPG, 80-73

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team improved to 2-0 overall Wednesday night by earning an 80-73 victory over visiting Pitt-Greensburg (0-2) in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Four Wolverine players scored in double figures, led by a 21-point outing from senior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's). Senior guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) fired in 15 points while freshman center Cory Huff (Kersey, Pa./Elk County Catholic) added 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Junior guard Stephen Tam (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham) tossed in 10 points.

Grove City shot 64 percent (28 for 44) from the field for the game and limited Pitt-Greensburg to 24-for-65 (37 percent) shooting. Grove City also held a 38-25 edge in rebounds, led by a 15-rebound effort from junior guard Caleb Knudsen (Saylorsville, Pa./Pius X). Huff added eight rebounds.

Grove City led 37-29 at halftime and led by as many as 18 points in the second half. The Bobcats eventually whittled the lead to 73-71 with 1:28 remaining on a jumper by Jerell Figueroa. However, Schwartz went 4 for 4 at the foul line down the stretch to help seal the win.

Figueroa led Pitt-Greensburg with 19 points while Rocco Contristano added 15 points. Pitt-Greensburg had 13 turnovers while Grove City turned over the ball 22 times, including 16 in the second half.

Knudsen tallied five assists while junior Joe Vermilya (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) added three assists. Wednesday's game marked the first time since the 1985-86 season that Grove City has played its first two games of the season at home. Last Saturday, the Wolverines downed Franciscan in the season opener, 58-43.

Grove City will open its road schedule Saturday at Mount Aloysius. Tip-off in Cresson, Pa., is 1 p.m.
