Wolverines fall out west
CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 91-61 decision at Pomona-Pitzer Friday night in the opening round of the David Wells Classic at the Rains Center.
Pomona-Pitzer led 49-33 at halftime and then broke open the game with a 16-4 run early in the second half.
Senior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) led Grove City with 11 points while senior forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) added eight points.
Grove City shot 46 percent (20 for 44) from the field for the game. However, Pomona-Pitzer (2-1) went 32 for 52 (62 percent) from the field for the game, including a 14-for-26 (54 percent) effort on three-pointers.
Pomona-Pitzer owned a 26-21 edge in rebounds. Junior Caleb Knudsen (Saylorsville, Pa./Pius X) and freshman center Cory Huff (Kersey, Pa./Elk County Catholic) both had four rebounds for Grove City (3-1).
Michael Cohen led Pomona-Pitzer with 29 points on 10-for-11 shooting.
Grove City will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday night at 8 p.m. Eastern.
