CMS tops Grove City

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 71-55 decision at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (5-1) Saturday night in the second night of action at the David Wells Classic.

CMS broke open the game in the latter portion of the second half by embarking on a 19-5 run. Grove City (3-2) trailed 28-26 at halftime but eventually pulled into a 40-40 tie on consecutive three-pointers by senior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's).

However, CMS took the lead for good on a three-point play by Michael Scarlett.

Junior swingman Caleb Knudsen (Saylorsville, Pa./Pius X) led Grove City with 15 points and senior forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) added 13 points. Marmelstein finished with nine points and a game-high six assists. Marmelstein also had a team-best four rebounds.

Tyler Gaffaney led CMS with 20 points. CMS shot 24 for 47 (51 percent) from the field while Grove City converted 20 of 41 (49 percent) attempts. CMS held a 29-21 edge in rebounds. Grove City had 14 turnovers while CMS committed eight turnovers.

Grove City will open its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Wednesday night against visiting Washington & Jefferson. Tip-off in the Grove City College Arena is 7:30 p.m.
