Hiram edges Grove City

BLUFFTON, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 72-64 decision to Hiram (7-2) in the semifinals of Bluffton College's McDonald's of Bluffton Tournament Monday afternoon at the Sommer Center.

Three Grove City players scored in double figures Monday, led by an 18-point effort from senior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's). Senior guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) pumped in 14 points and senior forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) added 11 points.

Grove City (4-5) led 26-25 at halftime but Hiram took the lead for good on the opening possession of the second half.

For the game, Grove City shot 22 of 55 (40 percent) from the field while Hiram converted 19 of 45 (42 percent) of its attempts. Hiram outrebounded Grove City, 37-28. Marmelstein had four rebounds and six assists. Grove City recorded assists on 19 of its 22 field goals.

J.J. Woodson led Hiram with 20 points. Hiram had 17 turnovers while the Wolverines committed just 13. Hiram went 24 for 32 (75 percent) at the foul line. Grove City sank 13 of its 17 foul shots.

Grove City will face either Bluffton or Ohio State-Lima in the consolation game Tuesday afternoon at noon.
