Grove City humbles W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team opened the second half of its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Saturday afternoon by rolling to a 68-49 victory over host Washington & Jefferson at the Henry Memorial Center.

Senior guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) tied a career high by firing in 25 points, including a career-best six three-point goals. Freshman center Cory Huff (Kersey, Pa./Elk County Catholic) poured in 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting for the Wolverines (8-10, 3-6) and senior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) contributed 13 points and a game-high six assists.

Grove City led 36-26 at halftime and broke open the game with an 18-3 run midway through the second half. Schwartz ignited the run with a three-pointer while Huff followed with three consecutive baskets in the paint.

Grove City jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never trailed. The Wolverines shot 25 of 58 (43 percent) from the field for the game and limited W&J (1-17, 0-9) to a 17-of-54 (32 percent) effort on field goals. Grove City turned over the ball 12 times while W&J had nine turnovers.

Huff, junior swingman Caleb Knudsen (Saylorsville, Pa./Pius X), sophomore forward Tyler McGrath (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), and junior guard Joe Vermilya (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) all grabbed six rebounds, helping Grove City own a 48-28 edge on the glass.

Schwartz added four steals while Knudsen tallied four assists.

Mike Resnik led W&J with 15 points.

Grove City will visit conference foe Thomas More Wednesday evening.
