Grove City falls in OT

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped an 83-81 overtime decision to Presidents' Athletic Conference archrival Geneva at Metheny Field House Saturday night. Geneva's Chaese Vaudrin banked in a mid-range jumper with one second left in the extra period to give Geneva the lead and eventual win.

Grove City furiously rallied twice to tie the game, first in regulation and then in overtime. In regulation, Grove City trailed 69-64 left with 25 seconds left but junior Caleb Knudsen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pius X) drove in for a layup, cutting the lead to three. Junior Joe Vermilya (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) then intercepted the inbounds pass, which led to a pair of free throws from senior guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler).

With 2.5 seconds left in regulation, senior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) tied the game at 73 with a three-pointer.

Geneva led 81-75 with 40 second remaining in overtime but a pair of Schwartz baskets and a Knudsen layup quickly tied the game at 81. Geneva missed a pair of free throws as well as a layup opportunity to help fuel Grove City's comeback effort.

Marmelstein led Grove City with 24 points while Schwartz fired in 20. Knudsen finished with 16 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Schwartz also had three assists and four steals.

Grove City shot 29 of 56 (52 percent) from the field for the game while Geneva went 27 of 50 (54 percent). Geneva outrebounded Grove City 33-29. Ethan Adamcyzk led Geneva (9-13, 6-7 PAC) with 24 points.

Grove City (9-13, 4-9 PAC) will host Saint Vincent next Saturday at 1 p.m.
