Waynesburg ousts Wolverines

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team closed its 2014-15 season Tuesday night with a 53-45 setback at No. 2 seed Waynesburg in the quarterfinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Rudy Marisa Field House.

Grove City pulled into a 32-32 tie with 7:20 left on a three-pointer from senior guard J.T. Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) but Waynesburg (17-9) countered with a 7-0 run. The Wolverines later cut the lead to 48-43 on a three-pointer by senior forward Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock). However, Waynesburg sewed up the win by going 5 for 6 at the foul line in the closing moments.

Schwartz and senior guard Mitch Marmelstein (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./St. Margaret's) each fired in 15 points for the Wolverines, who shot 16 for 39 (41 percent) from the field for the game. Schwartz also had five assists and three steals for Grove City.

B.J. Durham led Waynesburg with 13 points. Waynesburg went 14 of 33 (42 percent) from the floor. Waynesburg had a 24-23 edge in rebounds for the game. Waynesburg turned over the ball eight times and Grove City had 13 turnovers. Waynesburg led 22-21 at halftime.

Junior Isaiah Reeves (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) pulled down six rebounds and Schwartz collected five boards.

Grove City will lose Giesler, Marmelstein and Schwartz to graduation. Waynesburg will host third-seeded Bethany in the tournament semifinals Thursday night.
