Grove City opens with road win

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Grove City College men's basketball team opened its 2015-16 schedule Saturday afternoon by earning a 78-57 road win over Franciscan University at Kuzma Court.

Senior guard Joe Vermilya (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) paced Grove City (1-0) with 17 points on 7-of-7 shooting. He also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman guard Gabe Goode (Cocoa, Fla./Cocoa) poured in 12 points and sophomore forward Andrew Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) added 11 points.

Grove City shot 35 of 71 (49 percent) from the field, including a 20-for-36 (56 percent) effort in the second half. Grove City led 33-19 at halftime and opened the second half on a 17-5 run.

Defensively, Grove City limited the Barons to 29 percent (18 for 62) shooting from the floor. Grove City owned a 45-37 edge in rebounds. Senior guard Stephen Tam (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham) distributed four assists while Beckman and sophomore guard Seth Muck (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) both had three assists.

Christian Duke led Franciscan with 24 points and 13 rebounds.

Grove City will visit Pitt-Greensburg in non-conference play Wednesday night.
