Grove City falls to Eastern
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 74-57 verdict Saturday afternoon to Eastern University in the second day of play at Geneva College's Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Metheny Field House.
Eastern used a 13-2 run late in the first half and led 32-24 at halftime. Grove City pulled to within 34-32 two minutes into the second half on a layup by senior guard Joe Vermilya (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) but the Wolverines could reclaim the lead.
Vermilya, senior guard Caleb Knudsen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pius X) and sophomore center Cory Huff (Kersey, Pa./Elk County Catholic) all led Grove City (2-2) with nine points each. Knudsen added seven assists and six rebounds for Grove City. Each team had 33 rebounds.
Grove City shot 23 of 58 (40 percent) from the floor while Eastern converted 25 of 52 (48 percent) field goal attempts. Eastern went 10 for 23 (44 percent) behind the three-point line.
Malcolm Garrison led Eastern (3-1) with 23 points.
Grove City will visit Penn State Beaver in non-conference action Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
