Grove City improves to 6-2

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team improved to 6-2 overall by earning a 69-50 win Tuesday night over visiting Houghton in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena. The Wolverines have won four straight games.

Senior Caleb Knudsen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pius X), this week's Presidents' Athletic Conference Player of the Week, paced Grove City with 15 points while also added seven rebounds and six assists. Freshman guard Brandon Grider (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) rifled in 10 points and sophomore center Cory Huff (Kersey, Pa./Elk County Catholic).

Defensively, Grove City forced Houghton (4-3) to commit 25 turnovers. The Wolverines also held Houghton to 29 percent (19 of 65) shooting from the field for the game.

Grove City used a 22-4 run midway through the first half to take the lead for good. Sophomore guard Seth Muck (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) ignited the run with consecutive layups while Huff followed with back-to-back field goals.

Consecutive three-pointers from Knudsen and senior guard Stephen Tam (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham) capped the blitz. Grove City led 38-25 at halftime and maintained the double-digit lead throughout the second half.

Sophomore forward Andrew Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for Grove City while Tam also had seven boards. Grove City outrebounded Houghton, 49-41.

Tam also recorded three steals and sophomore forward Jon Grim (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) blocked three shots. Beckman had two blocks.

For the game, Grove City shot 30 of 71 (42 percent) from the field, including a 5-for-10 effort on three-point goals. The Wolverines finished with 22 assists as a team as Beckman, Grider, Tam and Vermilya all had three assists each.

Dylan Lambert led Houghton with 12 points.

Grove City returns to conference play Saturday with a 4 p.m. game at Thomas More.
