Wolverines charge past Allegheny
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team punctuated 2015 Wednesday afternoon by rallying for a 61-58 non-conference win over host Allegheny at the David Wise Center.
Senior guard Joe Vermilya (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) put Grove City ahead to stay with 54 seconds left when his three-pointer gave the Wolverines a 59-57 lead. With 11 seconds left, sophomore center Cory Huff (Kersey, Pa./Elk County Catholic) pushed the Wolverines' lead to 61-58.
Senior guard Stephen Tam (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham) then clinched the win when he blocked Billy Urso's three-point attempt as time expired.
Huff led Grove City (7-3) with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting while senior guard Caleb Knudsen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pius X) fired in 14 points, grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and had a game-high five assists.
Grove City trailed by as many as nine, 20-11, in the first half. However, the Wolverines eventually pulled to within 35-31 by halftime. Huff gave Grove City a 41-40 lead five minutes into the second half with a layup. Grove City took its biggest lead of the game, 51-44, with 10:39 left on a jumper by senior center Erik Carlstrom (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty).
Grove City owned a 34-31 edge in rebounds. The Wolverines shot 43 percent (26 of 61) from the field while Allegheny went 21 of 47 (45 percent).
Tam, Vermilya and sophomore forward Andrew Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) all had three assists for Grove City. The Wolverines had 17 assists and just 10 turnovers as a team. Allegheny had 15 turnovers.
Chris Milon led the Gators (2-8) with 15 points.
Grove City returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday night at archrival Geneva. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
