Grove City humbles Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team improved to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by rolling to an 81-66 win Saturday night over conference archrival Geneva at Metheny Field House.

Sophomore center Cory Huff (Kersey, Pa./Elk County Catholic) led Grove City with 19 points and nine rebounds while senior guard Stephen Tam (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham) fired in 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Sophomore forward Andrew Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) added 12 points for the Wolverines.

 Senior guard Joe Vermilya (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) contributed nine points and eight rebounds while senior Caleb Knudsen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pius X) scored nine points and dished out a game-high four assists.

Grove City trailed only once in the game, 2-0. The Wolverines charged out to a 19-10 lead midway through the first half and then pushed the lead to 39-23 late in the final minute of the half. Grove City held a 39-26 advantage at halftime.

The Wolverines led by no less than 14 points throughout the second half. Grove City shot 56 percent (18 of 32) from the field in the second half. For the game, Grove City went 34 of 71 (48 percent) on field goals while Geneva finished 22 of 50 (44 percent).

Knudsen recorded four steals and Tam had three thefts as Grove City forced 20 turnovers. Grove City committed just 11 turnovers. The Wolverines also outrebounded Geneva (0-11, 0-4), 36-35.

Ethan Adamczyk led Geneva with 29 points.

Grove City is 3-1 in the conference for the first time since 2009-10. At 8-3, the Wolverines are off to their best start in 14 seasons.

Grove City visits Westminster in conference action Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
