Grove City humbles Geneva on Hall of Fame Day
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team improved to 9-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by rolling to a 70-61 home win Saturday afternoon over archrival Geneva on Hall of Fame Day in the Grove City College Arena.
Four Grove City players scored in double figures, led by a 14-point effort from freshman guard Brandon Grider (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak). Sophomore center Cory Huff (Kersey, Pa./Elk County Catholic) poured in 13 points while senior guard Joe Vermilya (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) recorded an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double for the Wolverines.
Sophomore forward Andrew Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) added 11 points and six boards. Senior guard Stephen Tam (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham) tossed in nine points and also recorded a career-high nine assists.
Grove City (14-7 overall) charged out to a 15-2 lead and held Geneva without a field goal for the first eight minutes of the game. Grove City led 27-20 at halftime but Geneva pulled to within 35-31 early in the second half. However, freshman guard Gabe Goode (Cocoa, Fla./Cocoa) drilled a three-pointer that ignited a 7-0 run.
Grove City owned a 42-28 edge in rebounds. The Wolverines shot 23 of 58 (40 percent) from the field for the game while Geneva (3-18, 3-11) went 21 for 48 (44 percent). Grove City forced Geneva to commit 19 turnovers.
Grove City now leads the all-time series 92-75. Geneva is Grove City's most frequently-played opponent all-time.
The Wolverines will visit Chatham in conference play Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
