Titans edge Grove City
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team dropped a 59-57 decision to seventh-seeded Westminster in the quarterfinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament Tuesday night in the Grove City College Arena.
Westminster guard Brandon Domenick drained two free throws with 5.4 seconds left to break a 57-57 tie. Grove City had a chance to tie or win on its final possession but the Wolverines turned over the ball with 1.1 seconds left.
Freshman guard Brandon Grider (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) paced second-seeded Grove City (18-8) with a career-high 17 points while sophomore forward Andrew Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) added a 16-point, 13-rebound double-double. Beckman also blocked five shots.
Grove City jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first half as Westminster missed its first 18 shots of the game over the first nine minutes of the game. Westminster (10-17) rallied to take a 19-13 lead but Grove City countered with a 10-0 run. Grove City led 25-23 at halftime.
Westminster led by as many as 10, 43-33, in the second half but Grove City surged back. A Grider layup gave Grove City a 57-51 lead with 2:11 left, capping a 14-0 run.
For the game, Grove City shot 19 of 54 (35 percent) from the field while Westminster went 20 of 61 (33 percent). Grove City also owned a 46-39 edge in rebounds. Senior guard Joe Vermilya (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) added 10 rebounds for the Wolverines.
Grove City turned over the ball 15 times while Westminster had eight turnovers.
Paul Carswell led Westminster with 13 points. The Titans will face Saint Vincent in the tournament semifinals Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Grove City will now await a possible invitation to next week's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Championship Tournament.
