Waynesburg 68, Grove City 67
BOXSCORE
February 13, 1999--Rob Strcula's half-court heave with less than a second left in
regulation gave Waynesburg a 68-67 win over visiting Grove City, who had its winning
streak stopped at seven and suffered its first setback in the Presidents' Athletic
Conference.
With the win, Waynesburg extended its home winning streak to 40 games and improved to
14-8 overall, 4-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Wolverines dropped to
13-8 overall and 5-1 in the PAC, one game ahead of the Yellow Jackets and Thiel, who
defeated W&J earlier in the day, 84-79.
Strcula tied the game, 65-65, converting the back end of a one-and-one with four seconds
showing. Grove City inbounded the ball to Dave Pifer (Sarver, PA/Freeport), who drew
a blocking foul with three ticks and, for the second Saturday in a row, made two clutch
free throws in the final seconds, putting the Wolverines ahead 67-65. Streula then
banked in a desperation try from half court as the buzzer sounded.
Shane Meling (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) sparked the Wolverines in the second half with 14 of his team-high 16 points, which included three three-pointers. Pifer and Brent Steineman (Pickerington, OH/Wadsworth) each had 10 points. Lee Huffman (Gibsonia, PA/Hampton) grabbed a team-best eight rebounds and tallied nine points. David Stiansen (Telford, PA/Souderton) also chipped in with nine points.
Grove City hosts D'Youville of Buffalo, NY on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. in a tune-up before its home clash against Thiel next Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
