Grove City 69, Thiel 68

February 20, 1999--
One of the largest crowds in the history of Grove City College basketball (1,505) watched the Wolverines secure a least a first-place tie in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a 69-68 win over defending PAC champion Thiel College.

Michael Cratsley (Temecula, CA/Temecula) layed-in a bucket with 23 seconds left and drilled the front end of a one-and-one six seconds later to give Grove City the lead for good, 67-65.  Lee Huffman (Gibsonia, PA/Hampton) cooly put the Wolverines up by four with a pair of free throws with four ticks left before Thiel's Rich Williamson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to draw within one.

Grove City, now 15-8 overall and 6-1 in the PAC, led by as many as 10 points in second half after a 29-29 intermission.  Thiel dropped to 14-10 overall and 4-4 in the PAC.

Huffman, Dave Pifer (Sarver, PA/Freeport) and David Stiansen (Telford, PA/Souderton) tied for high-point honors on the team with 14 each.  Huffman added a game-high 14 rebounds.  Shane Meling (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) tossed in 11 points, Cratsley finished with seven points and Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion Center) chipped in with six.

Williamson netted a game-high 30 points for the Tomcats.

The Wolverines can win the PAC title outright with a win next Tuesday at Bethany.   The tip-off time has been changed to 6:00 p.m.  All the action can be heard on 91.1, WSAJ-FM and over the College's web site via RealAudio.  Grove City last won the PAC title in 1990-91, its last of three consecutive league crowns.  Waynesburg enters its game against Bethany tonight one game back in the conference standings at 4-2.
