Grove City 90, Hilbert 54

BOXSCORE

December 5, 1998--
Five Wolverines netted double figures to lead Grove City College past Hilbert College, 90-54, in the Wolverine home opener.  Grove City, now 3-2 overall and 7-0 against Hilbert all-time, shot 59% from the floor, connecting on 33 of 56 attempts.  Hilbert fell to 2-3.

Senior forward Michael Cratsley (Temecula, CA/Temecula) rifled in 18 points, aided by a school-record-tying 12-for-12 shooting from the charity stripe.  Bob Crow, the school's second all-time leading scorer, went 12 for 12 against Washington & Jefferson College on December 13, 1980 and Jon Drew did the same against Delaware College on December 29, 1965.

"Michael relaxed and played very well," Wolverine coach Steve Lamie said. "He is capable of really scoring in spurts."

Senior Brent Steineman (Pickerington, OH/Wadsworth) added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Dave Pifer (Sarver, PA/Freeport) drilled three treys en route to a 14-point performance. Shane Meling (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) and Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion Center) evenly split 22 points.

"The reason (Roberts) has gotten to be a college player is he’s like a sponge," Lamie said. "He soaks things up. He’s been a pleasant surprise."

Grove City held the Hawks to 29% shooting in the second half and 35% for the game. Hilbert’s Michael Tyszka scored 14 points in the first half and 21 for the game.

"Tyszka had 14 in the first half and we didn’t have an answer for him," Lamie said. "They were playing physical. In the 2nd half, we gave them more pressure. Everything came about because of our defense."

The 90-point output is the highest point total in regulation since Grove City downed Hilbert 93-45 in 1996. The Wolverines travel to La Roche College Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
