Wolverines Fall in Double OT

Box Score

WASHINGTON, PA, January 26, 2000--Shane Meling (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) fired in a team-high 17 points, including a 35-foot bomb to force overtime, but host Washington & Jefferson pulled out a 72-70 league victory Wednesday night in double OT.

Chris Kreider (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) scored 16 points and Tanner Prosser (Brentwood, PA/Brentwood) contributed 15 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists for Grove City, who fell to 6-12 overall, 1-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.  W&J improved to 7-8, 2-1 in the PAC.

Meling tied the game 54-54 with a running jumper just a few long strides past the half-court stripe.  He added eight of his 17 points in the extra sessions, including a pair of free throws that put the Wolverines ahead 65-62 before W&J's Ian Versaw sank a three-pointer to force a second OT.  Versaw closed with a game-high 19 points.

Meling's heroics continued in the second overtime when he tied the game 70-70 with a traditional three-point play with 23 seconds showing.  W&J's Nate Luderer was then fouled on a 15-foot jumper and converted both ends to put the Presidents up 72-70 with two seconds left.  After the ensuing in-bound pass was booted by W&J, the Wolverines set-up in the forecourt, but Meling's 18-footer to tie rang in and out.

The Wolverines play out of conference Saturday at Pitt-Bradford.  The start time, originally slated for 8:00 p.m., has been changed to 3:00 p.m.
