Wolverines Beat W&J, 79-77
GROVE CITY, PA, February 12, 2000--Chris Kreider (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) scored a game-high 25 points as Grove City kept its repeat title hopes alive with a 79-77 win over visiting Washington & Jefferson.
The Wolverines improved to 4-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (9-14 overall) and jumped into sole possession of second place. Thiel, an 83-80 winner over Waynesburg Saturday, upped its first-place league record to 5-1 and reduced its magic number to one. Grove City must beat Waynesburg at home next Saturday and have Thiel lose to W&J and Bethany next week to force a one-game playoff to decide the champion. W&J fell to 3-4 in the PAC (9-12 overall).
Kreider hit 11 of 15 shots from the floor to help the Wolverines outshoot the Presidents, 58% to 48%. Tanner Prosser (Brentwood, PA/Brentwood) posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Damon Finazzo (Erie, PA/McDowell) chipped in with 10 points. Pat Roberts (Home, PA/Marion Center) collected nine points and 11 boards, while Dave Pifer (Sarver, PA/Freeport) contributed seven points and five assists.
Grove City rallied from a 37-34 halftime deficit to lead by as many as 11 points in the second half. The Wolverines went up 72-61 with 2:49 left in regulation, then staved off a late charge by W&J to escape with the two-point victory.
Ian Versaw tallied a team-high 20 points for W&J.
Grove City travels to Buffalo, New York for a non-conference game against D'Youville College next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
