Alfery earns medalist; Grove City second at CMU

PENN HILLS, Pa. -- Freshman Jorden Alfery (Cheswick, Pa./Fox Chapel) earned his first collegiate medalist honor as the Grove City College men's golf team tied for second at the Carnegie Mellon Fall Invite on Wednesday afternoon at the Longue Vue Club and Golf Course.

Alfery fired a 75, his low round of the season, on the par-70 course to beat out Saint Vincent's Jake Reed by one stroke for the individual title. The host Tartans captured the team title with a 309 while the Wolverines posted a team score of 326 to tie with NAIA member Point Park for second in the five-team field.

Seniors Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) and Christian Locher (Mars, Pa./Mars) tied for ninth on the day with an 81 while freshman Anthony Smaldino (Butler, Pa./Vincentian Academy) and sophomore Austin Eckhardt (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg) shot 89 and 90, respectively.

Today's match concludes the fall season for Grove City. The Wolverines are scheduled to begin their spring season March 20-21 at the Capital Spring Invitational.
