Grove City takes third at PAC Fall Championships

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's golf team wrapped up competition at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Fall Golf Championships in third place on Tuesday afternoon at the New Castle Country Club.

The Wolverines posted a team score of 318 on Tuesday to give them a 36-hole score of 637. Washington and Jefferson won the fall portion of the championships with a 623 while defending-champion Saint Vincent finished in second place with a 628.

Senior Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) finished the event tied for third with a two-day total of 153 after shooting a 77 on Tuesday while classmate Christian Locher (Mars, Pa./Mars) fired the second-lowest score of the day with a 73 to finish fifth with a 154.

Freshman Jorden Alfery (Cheswick, Pa./Fox Chapel) carded an 83 on the day to conclude the tournament tied for 14th with a 163 while fellow freshman Anthony Smaldino (Butler, Pa./Vincentian Academy) is 24th with a two-day 168. Sophomore Austin Eckhardt (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg) sits one spot back of Smaldino in 25th with a 36-hole score of 171.

The 2014-15 PAC Championships feature a 72-hole stroke play event, with the 36 holes played at the Fall Championships and another 36 holes played at the Spring Championships in April. The combined 72-hole team total will determine the 2014-15 PAC team champion and winners of the league's automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Division III Championships.

New for 2014-15 season, the All-PAC teams, as well the PAC Players of the Year, will be determined by the combined 72-hole scores from the Fall and Spring Championships. In previous years, All-PAC and Player of the Year honors were determined exclusively at the 36-hole Spring Championships.

Grove City concludes its fall season on Thursday at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
