Grove City edged by NAIA Point Park in spring opener

MIDWAY, Pa. -- Freshman Cole McCook (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown STEM) and sophomore Jorden Alfery (Cheswick, Pa./Fox Chapel) posted the two lowest rounds of the day but it wasn't quite enough for the Grove City College men's golf team, as the Wolverines were edged by NAIA institution Point Park 593-596 on Friday afternoon at Quicksilver Golf Club.

Nine men played for each team, with seven scores counting in the unique-format dual match.

McCook fired the top round of the day for the Wolverines with a 77, edging Alfery's 78 by a single stroke. Sophomore Connor Tipping (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) recorded an 85 while junior Austin Eckhardt (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg) -- playing in his first match of the year after studying abroad during fall semester -- and freshman Ryan Koenig (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Eden Christian) posted identical rounds of 88.

Freshman Nick Barber (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and sophomore Connor Grieb (Wexford, Pa./Homeschooled) both posted scores of 90 to round out the Wolverine scoring seven, while sophomore Anthony Smaldino (Butler, Pa./Vincentian) and freshman Evan Hangliter (Seven Fields, Pa./Seneca Valley) shot 91 and 92, respectively.

Grove City hosts its own McBride-Behringer-Allen "MBA" Invite on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Grove City Country Club.
