Locher, Giesler go 1-2 as Grove City Red wins MBA Invite

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior Christian Locher (Mars, Pa./Mars) continued his dominance at the Grove City Country Club as he and fellow senior Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) rolled to a 1-2 finish to lead the Grove City College men's golf "Red" team to a score of 294 and the team title in the seven-team Grove City College McBride-Behringer-Allen "MBA" Invitational on a rainy Wednesday afternoon.

Locher fired a three-under 69 to earn medalist honors at his fifth-consecutive home invitational event while Giesler, the lone other golfer in the 38-man field to finish his day under par, posted a one-under 71 to earn individual runner-up honors. Grove City's 294 edged Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Thiel by three strokes for the team crown while Penn State Behrend finished third with a team score of 315.

Freshman Jorden Alfery (Cheswick, Pa./Fox Chapel) finished third for the Grove City "Red' squad and ninth overall with a four-over 76 while sophomore Austin Eckhardt (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg) was just one spot back in a tie for 10th with a 78. Freshman Anthony Smaldino (Butler, Pa./Vincentian Academy) rounded out the scoring for the "Red" team with an 84 to tie for 20th individually.

Grove City's "Black" team also competed in the invitational, finishing sixth out of seven teams with a four-man score of 352.

Freshman Connor Tipping (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) led Grove City "Black" and tied for 24th individually with an 86 while seniors Austin Wenger (Lititz, Pa./Lititz Christian) and Nick Guiler (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) each posted an 88. Sophomore Josh Van Eerden (Greensboro, N.C./Adler Prep) rounded out the counting scores with a 90 while freshman Connor Grieb (Wexford, Pa./Homeschooled) fired a 94.

Grove City is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 14 when they compete in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational at the Longue Vue Country Club in Verona, Pa.
