Grove City runner-up at Thiel Invite

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's golf team placed three golfers among the top six finishers but came up just short of capturing the team title, finishing second at the seven-team Thiel Spring Invitational on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at The Greens of Greenville.

The Wolverines shot a team score of 312, finishing just three strokes behind host Thiel's 309 and two strokes ahead of Saint Vincent's 314.

Senior Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) led the Wolverines and tied for third overall in the 38-golfer field with a two-over 74, finishing just two strokes back of Saint Vincent's Jake Reed for medalist honors. Senior Christian Locher (Mars, Pa./Mars) and freshman Jorden Alfery (Cheswick, Pa./Fox Chapel) each shot a 75 to tie for fifth while freshman Anthony Smaldino (Butler, Pa./Vincentian Academy), who was competing as an individual, posted a 78 to tie for 10th.

Had Smaldino been among Grove City's scoring five, the Wolverines would have captured the team title by seven strokes with a 302.

Grove City will compete in the Westminster Invitational on Monday at noon at the New Castle Country Club.
