Giesler medalist as Wolverines win at Westminster

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Senior Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa./Slippery Rock) earned his second medalist honor of the spring season and the Grove City College men's golf team had four golfers finish in the top nine to win the team title at the seven-team Westminster Spring Invite on Monday afternoon at the New Castle Country Club.

Grove City's "A" team fired a team score of 304 to finish ahead of fellow Presidents' Athletic Conference schools Saint Vincent (312) and Thiel (317), who finished second and third, respectively. Grove City also fielded a "B" team for the event, which finished sixth out of seven teams with a 351.

Giesler fired a one-over 73 to beat out Thiel's Aaron Wakely for the individual title by a single stroke while freshman Jorden Alfery (Cheswick, Pa./Fox Chapel) tied for third place in the 41-golfer field with a three-over 76. Senior Christian Locher (Mars, Pa./Mars) finished just one stroke behind Alfery in a tie for fifth with a 77 while freshman Anthony Smaldino (Butler, Pa./Vincentian Academy) posted a 79 to tie for ninth place.

Sophomore Austin Eckhardt (Strasburg, Ohio/Strasburg) rounded out the Grove City "A" five with an 85.

Freshman Connor Tipping (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) led the Grove City "B" squad by tying for 14th place with an 82 while senior Austin Wenger (Lititz, Pa./Lititz Christian) finished one stroke back with an 83.

Grove City will look to carry their momentum into the 2015 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships, to be held this Friday and Saturday at the Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon, Pa.
