Grove City "shocks" Messiah

GRANTHAM, PA, September 9, 2000--Junior Andy Shockey (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) scored a pair of goals as the Wolverine soccer team blanked Division III powerhouse Messiah, 2-0, near Harrisburg on Saturday.

Grove City improved to 2-1 on the season, while Messiah, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals in 1999 and finished 18-3-1 overall, dropped to 3-1.

Shockey scored in the 11th and 50th minutes, his first goal coming unassisted after he stole the ball from a Falcon defender and broke in alone.  His second tally was set up on a crossing pass from junior Jon Veschio (Mercer, PA/Mercer).

Wolverine sophomore goalkeeper Brad Smith (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) posted his second straight shutout with 12 saves.  Senior stopper Sean Norris (Edgeworth, PA/Quaker Valley) helped clear out 20 Falcon shots and 14 corners.

Messiah outscored its opponents last season, 74-8, and lost in the NCAA quarterfinals to eventual national champion St. Lawrence, 1-0.
