GCC blanks defending PAC champs

GROVE CITY, PA, September 19, 2001-- Senior Chris Crefeld (Manchester, NJ/PTHS) broke a scoreless tie in the 14th minute and the Wolverine defense did the rest as Grove City College recorded its fifth shutout of the season Wednesday, defeating visiting Bethany College, 1-0.

Grove City improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while Bethany, winner of the last 21 conference titles, dropped to 3-4 overall, 1-2 in the PAC.

Crefeld netted the game-winner -- his first goal of the season -- off a pass from senior Brian Williams (Charlotte, NC/First Assembly).  Junior goalkeeper Brad Smith (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) made five saves to preserve his 13th career shutout.  Bethany out-shot Grove City, 11-7.

The Wolverines, off to their best start since 1996 when they opened 7-0, have surrendered just two goals through their first six games -- both to top-ranked Messiah College, who dealt GCC its only loss of the season on Sep. 8, 2-0.  Grove City finished 16-2 in '96 and claimed a piece of its first PAC title, sharing the crown with Bethany.

Grove City will next host Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.  The two schools currently sit atop the PAC standings with unbeaten league records.  W&J defeated Bethany earlier this season, 3-1.
