Wolverines beat W&J in OT, net No. 1 seed

WASHINGTON, PA, October 20, 2001--Senior halfback Sam Coffman (Scottdale, PA/Southmoreland) has taken his share of shots in his four-year career, but none have been struck with more precision than the one launched in the 105th minute Saturday at league-rival Washington & Jefferson College.

With nine seconds remaining in the first overtime session, Coffman fired a 30-yard shot over the outstretched arm of W&J's goalkeeper and under the crossbar to give Grove City a 2-1 victory and the No. 1 seed at the 2001 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, Nov. 2-3.  The Wolverines improved to 11-4 overall and 6-1 in the PAC, while W&J dropped to 9-7 overall, 5-2 in the conference.

Wolverine sophomore forward Justin Blakeslee (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) broke a scoreless tie in the 70th minute with his first goal of the season off a pass from senior Brian Williams (Charlotte, NC/First Assembly).  The Presidents countered with a goal in the 79th minute, and neither team could break the tie in regulation.

Coffman's game-winner marked his second goal of the season.

Grove City junior goalkeeper Brad Smith (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) was credited with six saves as the Wolverines outshot W&J, 14-11.

Despite securing the top seed, the PAC championship tournament will likely be hosted by W&J due to an agreement made prior to the start of the season.
