Wolverines earn 3-3 tie at Geneva in 2003 opener
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Three different players scored goals Saturday afternoon as the Grove City College men's soccer team opened the 2003 season with a 3-3, double-overtime tie at NAIA Geneva.
In the 46th minute, freshman Steve Smith (Fairport, N.Y./Homeschooled) knotted the match at 1-1 with his first career goal. The Wolverines fell behind again, only to tie the match at 2-2 on a goal from senior Dustin King (Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta) via Peter Williams' (Charlotte, N.C./First Assembly) assist.
Six minutes later, freshman Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) put Grove City up with his first collegiate goal after assists from King and senior Mike Koper (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin).
Sophomore Nathaniel Jones was credited with the assist on Smtih's goal, his first assist of the year.
In goal, sophomore Joel Gladfelter (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) stopped 11 shots in his collegiate debut. Geneva out-shot Grove City 25-9.
Geneva led 1-0 at halftime before the Wolverines (0-0-1) scored their three second-half goals. Grove City returns to action Wednesday at Pitt-Bradford. Saturday's game was originally scheduled for Grove City but was moved to Geneva due to field reconstruction at Grove City.
